DINING REVIEW: BLUEFIN SUSHI (BOCA RATON)

Bluefin Sushi & Thai Grill is located at 861 Yamato Road in Boca Raton, on the NW corner of Yamato and Congress. We are going describe below our first and only visit there thus far. We stumbled upon this place on a Friday night, while looking for a random evening dinner spot in Boca Raton.

BLUEFIN SUSHI’S MISO SOUP

As someone who loves cooking and eating soups, we often judge a restaurant’s quality by their soups. Particularly for a sushi/Japanese restaurant, a good miso should always be in order. Fairly simple to make, a miso soup is what you would typically eat first, and which sets the tone for rest of your meal. However, Bluefin’s miso soup lacked flavor, as our impression was that not enough miso paste was in it. It tasted watered down and lacking.

BLUEFIN’S SUSHI MORI C ($22)

Bluefin Sushi Boca’s Sushi Mori C, which also comes with soup or salad, included eel roll, salmon skin hand roll, and 6 pieces of nigiri. It was certainly the best plate we received at Bluefin. The sushi tasted acceptable and fresh enough, although it was not spectacular as it also lacked flavor. When compared to other sushi places we love and frequent, such as Sushi Yama, for example, it was not as good in our opinion.

BLUEFIN’S BEEF WITH GARLIC SAUCE ($18)

This Bluefin’s dish consisted of beef sautéed with garlic, black pepper, and sherry wine, served on a bed of steamed vegetables. It was our least favorite entree ordered at Bluefin Sushi Boca. The beef was tough and gray, and did not taste particularly fresh. The broccoli tasted raw. Only the sauce tasted “OK.” It was a little sweet with garlic and sherry wine.

In sum, Bluefin’s food did not wow us. In addition, the service was quite disappointing as well. First, the waitress started hastily asking for our drink order before we even sat down and had a chance to look at the menu. Once we got our food, we did not see her again until at least 20 minutes after we finished eating and had to ask a random staff member for our check. Her service in between was also below average, while the restaurant was not particularly busy at all, especially for a Friday night (while there was a lineup of staff members standing around and chitchatting 10 ft. away from our table, which was one of at the most five tables occupied while we were there).

Note: This is our honest, unsolicited review. We were not commissioned to do it, and received nothing in exchange.
